Description

(From front to back) USS Saratoga (CV-3), USS Enterprise (CV-6), USS Hornet (CV-12), and the Light carrier USS San Jacinto (CVL-30) rest at the Naval Air Station in Alameda, California. This photo was taken around mid-September 1945, with the surrendering of Japan and ending of the Second World War being only a couple weeks old.  And also in this photo you can see four generations of  US Fast Aircraft Carriers that served as the backbone of US Navy during the Pacific War.  As a side not there is there is one generation of US fast aircraft carrier not here, USS Wasp (CV-7) is not present. She was scuttled by the USS Lansdowne on September 15, 1942 while supporting  US Marines on Guadalcanal, after suffering massive gasoline fire damage from two torpedoes from Japanese submarine 1-19.

My great grandfather on my father's side was a survivor of the Battle of Jutland. Never talked about it though, being one of only two survivors from the ship he was stationed on when it sank.
